On Tuesday, April 15, 1997, Straus Park on 106th Street and Broadway in New York City was rededicated. The ribbon cutting ceremony was held at 11:00 AM by the City of New York Department of Parks & Recreation. Many family members, community members and politicians attended. A full program was planned. It included speeches by Leon Auerbach, president of the West 106th Street Block Association; Paul A. Kurzman, great-grandson of Isidor and Ida Straus; Henry J. Stern, Commissioner of Parks & Recreation; Adrian Benepe, Manhattan Borough Commissioner and Ruth Messinger, Manhattan Borough President. The program also included songs by local area school children and the song, "Still," from the Broadway production "Titanic," performed by Alma Cuervo and Larry Keith who portray Ida and Isidor Straus in play. The weather was perfect. Eric Mattes, landscape architect for the project, was on hand as were many other members of Commissioner Stern's staff.
