The Straus Historical Society fosters educational activities with respect to the settlement of Jews in the United States and, in particular, the family of Lazarus and Sara Straus, their ancestors and their descendants. The focus of the Society's activities on the Straus Family is based on the family's involvement in government, commerce, and philanthropy.
The history of the Straus family is part of world history. It is written for the present. It provokes discussion, imagination and creation. It ties the present with the past and draws pathways to the future.
It is with deep sadness that the Straus Historical Society announces the passing of two valued members of our Board of Directors, Paul A. Kurzman and Al Berr. Their contributions to the Society—and to the broader cultural and academic communities—leave an enduring legacy.
Al Berr, former Deputy Executive Director of the New York State Council on the Arts and cherished SHS Board member, passed away on October 7, 2025, at age 97. A passionate advocate for the arts, Al helped sustain countless cultural institutions across New York and brought that same dedication to his service on the SHS Board and committees. His wisdom, generosity, and spirit will be deeply missed.
Paul Kurzman, Professor of Social Work and longtime SHS Board member, passed away on October 17, 2025, at age 86. A great-grandson of Isidor and Ida Straus, Paul was a pioneering educator, author, and leader in his field whose insight and compassion shaped generations of social workers. He served with distinction on the SHS Board—twice as Chair—and was beloved for his warmth, humor, and devotion to family.
