2010 was a year of dramatic accomplishments. None of it would have occurred without your generous support.

In April 2010 descendants of Isidor and Ida Straus and Joan Adler attended the grand opening of the Titanic Museum Attraction in Pigeon Forge, TN. SHS loaned this new museum artifacts from its archival collection for display in the recreated suite of the Strauses aboard Titanic.

Members of the Herbert and Therese Kuhn Straus family visited Middletown Farm in Middletown, NJ in May where Ned Brown hosted a visit to their family’s country home. SHS contributed to articles written by Ned Brown as a result of our shared interest. Photographs of the compound’s reconstruction were shared by Sally Strong Straus just in time for our visit.

The Steering Committee has been hard at work meanwhile developing plans for a Straus Scholarship program and Medallion Awards to honor people who have major accomplishments in the areas where Straus family members were known for their significant achievements.

Executive director Joan Adler gave talks about her upcoming book For the Sake of the Children: The Relationship of Otto Frank and Nathan Straus Jr. at the Anne Frank Center in New York City and at the International Jewish Genealogical Society’s conference in Los Angeles. She gave two other Straus related talks as well in LA at the conference.

Our SHS archives continue to expand and improve. Our resources are contributing to the documentation of Straus family members’ lives in doctoral theses, books, articles, documentaries and presentations. Several family members donated their papers, letters, photographs and memorabilia to our archives last year. These items are being added to the already large body of material available for future reference now in our archives. In addition, family oral history interviews were conducted. These also will be added to our archives and made available.

Sustaining growth and maintaining excellence, however, does not come without cost, a cost that increases each year. Although this is an illustrious family, the Society is not independently funded. We ask your help in strengthening and expanding our programs by becoming a donor for 2011. Your support is vital. A fully TAX-DEDUCTIBLE gift will ensure that the story of this remarkable family will be researched, documented, preserved and disseminated.
