We begin each year with reflection upon our past accomplishments and anticipation of the new and exciting projects for 2007.
The accomplishments of the Straus Historical Society in 2006 have been dramatic. The Society sponsored a tour of the Rheinpfalz area of Germany, the place where the Straus family originated. During our trip the town of Otterberg dedicated a plaque to Oscar S. Straus. This trip gave family and friends an opportunity to meet, get to know one another, and to learn about the history of the family in a way no other experience could accomplish. The Society also sponsored a walking tour of Woodlawn Cemetery, Bronx, NY. Woodlawn historian Susan Olsen mesmerized the group with her stories about the buildings, landscape and about the people buried there.
The Straus Historical Society website continues to grow as new information, and past issues of the newsletter, are uploaded. Our archives contains a comprehensive body of material relating to the lives and accomplishments of Straus family members that is recognized by scholars, authors, other historical societies and by the general public. Our resources are contributing to the documentation of Straus family s lives in doctoral theses, books, articles, documentaries and in presentations in schools, and in historical and genealogical societies.
We look forward to sponsoring a Spring 2007 tour of Salem Field; a cemetery where many Straus family members are buried. We are seeking a library science intern to help us catalogue the material we have accumulated during 2006. And we continue to look toward writing grants that will allow us to take on new challenges.
Sustained growth and maintaining excellence does not come without cost, a cost that increases each year. Although this is an illustrious family, the Society is not well funded. We ask that you help us strengthen our programs by becoming a donor. Your help and support is vital. Your FULLY TAX-DEDUCTIBLE gift will ensure that the story of this remarkable family will be researched, documented, preserved and disseminated.
Help us honor the legacy of the past for future generations. Please consider making a generous tax-deductible donation to the Straus Historical Society, Inc.
