2008 was a year of dramatic accomplishments. None of it would have occurred without your generous support.
On February 6, 2008 the American Jewish Historical Society and SHS co-hosted an Evening With The Straus Family at the Center for Jewish History in New York City. More than 150 people attended this cocktail hour and dinner. A slide show of photographs was projected during the cocktail hour. Family members from their own branch gave talks about their ancestors with accompanying slides during the dinner. The evening was a huge success. More evenings of this kind will be planned.
Last year we published the English language translation of A History of the Jews of Otterberg, by Dr. Hans Steinebrei. This outstanding body of work details the history of the Jewish community in the southwestern part of present day Germany. Anyone with an interest in the Straus family, or in the establishment of a German Jewish community, will find this book fascinating. It is available for purchase through the Society. We also contributed photographs and information to Macy's: The Store, The Star, The Story by Robert M. Grippo. It is also available from SHS.
Our SHS website and archives continue to expand and improve. Our resources are contributing to the documentation of Straus family members' lives in doctoral theses, books, articles, documentaries and in presentations. Several family members donated their papers, letters, photographs and memorabilia to our archives last year. These items are being added to the already large body of material available for future reference in our archives. In addition, two family oral history interviews were conducted. These will also be added to our archives and made available.
Joan Adler, SHS's executive director, received a grant from ANNE FRANK-Fonds in Basil, Switzerland to write a book about the letters between Otto Frank and Nathan Straus Jr. An article about these letters appeared in the August 2007 issue of the newsletter.
Sustaining growth and maintaining excellence, however, does not come without cost, a cost that increases each year. Although this is an illustrious family, the Society is not independently funded. We ask your help in strengthening and expanding our programs by becoming a donor for 2009. Your help and support is vital. Your FULLY TAX-DEDUCTIBLE gift will ensure that the story of this remarkable family will be researched, documented, preserved and disseminated.
